CHAPTER 7

THE RAMSEY FAM8ILY OF VIRGINIA AND COMANCHE COUNTY, TEXAS

FOURTH GENERATION (coordinated with the Nathan Franklin Carson family)

1145    Thomas F. RAMSEY was born on 10 April, 1734 and died in 1790 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.  His birthplace is not known for certain, with one source giving Scotland, and another that he was probably born in Augusta County, Virginia. The log cabin in which he supposedly was born is in Pennsylvania today, as Augusta County extended into Pennsylvania at the time of his birth.  A family legend has it that Thomas and his two brothers, James and John, rode out of Augusta County in search of their destiny and fortune.  Records show that Thomas and John, circa 1751, bought land close to Sydorsville on Chestnut Creek.  In 1763, Thomas bought 200 acres from a John Richardson, on Poplar B ranch, near Snow Creek and Pigg River. He was married to (1146) Frances (Unknown) RAMSEYand they lived in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, where they raised thirteen children.  She was born on 6 June, 1740 in Virginia, and died on 6 April, 1806 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

Thomas received a patent for 328 acres of land on Chestnut Creek in Pittsylvania County on 3 Aug., 1771.  A census of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, taken in 1782 shows Thomas heading a household of twelve “white persons”, one dwelling, and three other buildings.  A tax list prepared in 1787 in Pittsylvania County shows that their household included two white males above age 16 but under age 21, four horses, and eleven cattle.  Thomas made his will on 26 April, 1790 (his name was misspelled as “Ramsbe”), and an inventory of his estate was made 29 Oct., 1790.

Reference 2 (see end of the chapter) includes a sketch of the stone house built by Thomas on his property in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.  The house stood for about 140 years from about 1763 to around 1900.  The rocks for the old house were hauled from a quarry on the farm by horse.  The blasting marks are still visible at the Old White Rock quarry.  Someone inadvertently three a cherry seed out the door, it sprouted at the back of the house, and grew into a tree.  Years later, it began to crack the walls of the house.  At that point, the Ramseys moved out, and the bats move in.  Thomas purchased the land 15 July, 1763 from a John Richardson, a blacksmith. Richardson may have started the house foundation before Thomas purchased the land, but Thomas built the house.  It was located on Poplar Branch near Stone Creek and the Pigg River.

They had thirteen children, which were:
